While it might seem like an easy task, a lot can go wrong when coloring your hair at home. Not only do you want to take the necessary steps, but you also want to try to be as mess-free as possible. To help you with the coloring process, we’ve put together this article with 5 steps you should take to dye your hair at home.
Get Your Supplies
The first thing you’ll want to do is get all of your supplies ready. In addition to the box of hair dye, you’ll also want to get some kind of comb and clips that you can use to section your hair. In addition, you’ll want to get an old shirt that you wouldn’t mind ruining and a better pair of gloves to work with. Once you have everything ready and open, it’s time to do a strand test.
Do a Strand Test
A strand test is when you take a small amount of hair and apply the dye. Not only will this give you an idea of the final color, but you’ll also find out if you’ll have any adverse reactions. After applying the dye to the strand, you’ll want to let it sit for the recommended amount of time, then wash it out. You can use a hairdryer to get the strand dry to see if you’ll like the final color.
You’ll want to section your hair into 4 equal parts. To start, section the hair right down the middle to make 2 separate sections. With each of these sections, you’ll want to section them off to make 2 equal parts and clip all 4 sections into place. Make sure you’re using clips that will keep everything in place and won’t cause any of the hair to get mixed together.
Cover & Wait
Start with the sections in the front and move towards the back. Depending on the type and length of hair you have, you might need more than 1 box of dye. Make sure your entire head is covered with dye and check to make sure there aren’t any hairs that don’t have dye. Put something like a bag over your hair and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. Once the time is up, look at the hair to see if you need to leave the dye on a little longer.
Rinse & Conditioner
Once the dye is done processing, you can rinse your hair. It might take some time, but you’ll want to keep rinsing until the water runs clear. After everything is rinsed out, go ahead and put the conditioner in your hair. Usually, you’ll need to let it sit in your hair for around 3 minutes before rinsing. You don’t have to, but you can shampoo your hair as you normally would. As you can see, it’s a relatively easy process as long as you’re doing it the correct way. Remember, if you don’t get the results you want, let your hair recover and try again. Different brands of hair dye are better than others, so try and get the best quality that you possibly can. If you didn’t succeed the first time and aren’t really up to trying again, you might need to get some professional guidance.
